Can't help you with the neighbor, unless you either move or sell him your M5, as for spending $25 or $30K to upgrade from an 06 t0 an 09, that would depend on many things, for me, I lease and will continue to do so as long as BMWNA offers attractive programs, in our economy you either keep a luxury car 5 or more years or lease them. My 2007 was worth less the payoff. Buying a car off lease makes no sense, and the used luxury car market stinks which is why many companies have either discontined leasing or made it unattractive.

The 2009 E60 IMO is much improved over the 2007, maybe the right word is refined, as for the seats, yes the head rests are different, much softer, I also believe the seat cushins feel softer without being to soft, this is my 3rd car with comfort seats and these are the best yet.
Unfortunately BMW is making it a priority to lower their leasing numbers. I think the days of killer residuals and nice money factors on BMWs are behind us....

re: Leasing vs. Buying... Leasing makes a lot of sense if you load up the car with options - those options have residual with a lease - but almost no residual on a trade....

re: Leasing vs. Buying... Leasing makes a lot of sense if you load up the car with options - those options have residual with a lease - but almost no residual on a trade.... I leased my '08 after purchasing my '03 sport as a 25,000 mile CPO car. The warranty ran out with two years left to pay for it. After reviewing that I had paid an average of 1000.00 per month for 3 years ( down payment and payments at 6%) and the car with 80,000 miles it was a no brainer. I retailed my '03- it was a really nice car- worked with LB BMW with a cap cost discount of nearly 7000.00 and with a 2.5% money factor- I saved a lot of monthly money with no cost maintainance and warranty. Better business deductions were a consideration too. I dont believe within the next year or so, with BMW sales strategy and slow sales, costs will stay this low.

I know that sales are slow- I received a broadcast Email from another dealer with a factory 2500 rebate on a lease or purchase on 550's. so the deals are still exceptional expecially if you find an remaining '08 that has grown weeds around it.

I did find ultra low mile 2008's that dealers CPO'd with 7500 miles and ended up retailing at 50K- if you had the cash. Otherwise, financing at conventional used car 7% interest made no sense to me.

One more thing about leases- if you are really can't let go of the car, BMW will sometimes negioiate the residual price later in your contract. BMW also provides GAP insurance - at no cost to you.

Oh, and that '08 shifter- After a couple of weeks- you adopt to it. Shutting down the car sets it in Park without additional intervention. I have the comfort access down now too- try pushing the start button first, then step on the brake and the car starts.

Some dislikes I have about these cars is waiting for the I Drive to boot up after I initially start the car...and having to hit the start button a second time when exiting to shut off the remaining acessories- radio. Why can't everything shut down when you open the door?

Well...
I had an 06 550 and now have an 08 (M5) and here are my thoughts on your comment

In short, I miss my 06 550. It was rare (they only made them for 6 months or so), and short of the transmission, it was just a perfect car and no way would it be worth the $25-30K to upgrade to the 09. So keep what you have....
Wow good to know. I'll make sure to tell who ever I sell my 06 550i: "Never mind the high mileage... it's rare!" The trick is not to accidentally drive something newer...they are always making some refinement each model year!!! Your right though, everytime I get into my car, It's makes me happy. Even at almost 75K miles, the car holds up very well. No rattles or major issues, etc.

Yeah, but you can get to the grocery store twice as fast as he can.
