I was surprised that BP wasn't on this list. Wonder why?
i think Amaco used to be on the list, something happened when it became BP

Interesting. Will have to do some searching and see why a major wouldn't make the list.

haha. i have heard good things about sunoco. turns out, none of us are fuel specialists... i suspect that any major fueling station will suffice. I would imagine mobile is alright. I DO have a friend who tests fuels imported to the US and many of the fuels come from the same places anyway. for all i know, murphy (wal mart) fuel is the same as sunoco.

most gas are same, its just formulated differently based on local environmental clause and different additives. wherever you go, just use 91+ or higher octane.

If you drive 300 miles a week (about 60 miles a day per one work week)
and the difference between 89 and 91 is about 10 cents (pretty normal)
you get about 20 miles/gal. so about 15 gallons a week (roughly one fill-up a week, again pretty normal)
you will save:
15x$.10=$1.50 a week
or
$1.50x52=$78/year not to mention the lower fuel economy you will get. so I would say you would save roughly about $60/year.

Is it worth it to put your car through all this and risk further/more issues with your car down the road?
You don't need to answer, just think about it.
I am "down the road" a bit with my 740 and no problems for the last 145,000 miles burning 87. It requires 91 and is not a turbo so I doubt that the turbo in the 535 is the "main reason" for the 91 requirement in the 5er. Put 224,000 on my old Volvo buring 87 when 91 was "required" and never saw a problem down the road.

no the key word is "recommended" and not required. with modern distributorless engines the computer controls the timing and will adjust accordingly so as not to destroy the engine. while you may be able to run on 87 octane with no problems, however you're not getting optimum performance. the engine makes the most horse power right before a pre-detonation can occur, therefore you want to use gas that can delay the combustion right at top dead center of the cylinder. especially if you have a turbo or supercharger which has a much higher compression ratio can ignite without spark under load, therefore you want a slower burning gas, hence higher octane.

Been using sunoco 91 octane on my 2007 525i..
I've also used 89 octane with no issues since the manual clearly states that it does no harm to the engine.
