I have a 2005 530 with 6 speed manual. (230 hp) The window sticker listed highway mileage at 30mpg. I often drive from Richmond to Atlanta on RT 85 and get 30 to 31 actual mpg.
The BMW web site indicates the 2008 230hp 528 will get 27 and the 535 24. With all of the improvements from 2005, (new throttle system, regenerative charging, direct injection etc.) how could the mileage go down?

Very good point, especially as the torque has dropped from 220 on the 530i to a truly pathetic 200 on the 528i. I saw under technical data that BMW says the 535i gets 17/26 mpg.

One possibility is maybe BMW is using the new EPA methodology - I read somewhere that the EPA changed it and the effect is lower posted MPG, but I am not sure whether it is in effect now.

It seems like the penalty (1 mpg) for buying the 535i is very small given the massive bump in bhp and torque, although mpg really suffer when turbos are in full use during hard driving.

All 2008's are subject to the EPA's new testing methodology.

Ya it just blows my mind and pisses me off that a 50k car like the 530 was or a 538 is-has such crappy hp-it is a crime. I liked the 530 for its look and got a good deal but never had driven one and I know there is mroe to a car than hp but I am really unhappy with the pure crappy performance of the N52 engine in these cars-why was this such a great engine anyway-who cares about a light 255 hp engine-so an engine is heavier but makes 333whp like the NA e46M3-now THAT is an engine-anyway I have no idea why anyone would buy a 528-or worse yet ever bought a 525.

Gosh the 04/05 525/530 was even more of a crime-that must have been truly like driving a yaught around town.

Guess I am in a bad mood after driving my dads 10 year old grand cherokee with a v8 with 210,000 miles that felt substantially quicker than my 530-purely ridiculous in my mind-what the hell is so hard about puttin 300 plus hp in a 50k car and above-seriousssly.

And to those who ask why I bought it then-well got a REALLY good lease deal and I love the look of the 5 which weighs heavily to me. anyway just a rant

The new gas mixture (with ethanol E85?) also lowers MPG. My 2004 530i used to consume 22.7 MPG but is now down to 20.6MPG (and the fuel costs more too!)

How do you get 350 hp. Last I checked on the official BMW website it lists the 535i at 300hp. I guess you took a 535i to the dyno and used your skewed views on how a dyno read hp to come up with 350hp. Good Job, Bravo.

How stupid, we have to pay more money and get lesser mpg (about 20-25%).How stupid, we have to pay more money and get lesser mpg (about 20-25%). Type the keyword(ethanol,E85 and so on )> search>U will find some interesting discussions and facts about it.

Did some research on E85 or so called ethanol blended gas. All . . , It is all about politics and bribery, money and greed. We pay to Gas lords in USA for oil from Mid-East and we have to pay to same guys in USA with different names of fuel: ethanol. We do not have good alternative transportatation(trains buses etc.) and other fuel technology(hybrids, gas, diesel, electric and so on) that are already in other countries.

Dude you are the most uninformed bmw consumer I have seen who actualy visits forums. Look it up for yourself-stock 335s have been dynoing at 270 whp-I guess my mental math puts that at around 350ish no? Maybe closer to 330ish. Whatever the conversion it is putting down a lot more than 300 crank-do a google or look around at some 335 forums, pick up a car and driver that featured the car, search car and driver online-a number of things you can do you smartass-youll feel dumb when you see the info and realized you just made yourself look like an uninformed person who always acts like they know better-

Were you serious-"bmw said it has 300hp" haha so what that is gospel? Like anyone has ever taken a car dealers hp at face value-read the info bro

I guess I take back what I said-this is why bmw will continue to sell 550s at 10k over a 535 because I guess most buyers will just see the bmw figures of 300 hp v. 360 and think they are getting a much faster machine. Just shows you even someone dedicated enough to use an internet bmw forum is as uninformed as the next guy with new products. Marketing of bwm is brilliant

So we are to assume you are referring to dyno numbers posted on the net and not what BMW claims. Your math is wrong, at 270 rwhp it "converts" to ~326 hp and not 350hp. I will not try to explain the conversion ethod as you still think that a vehicles drivetrain loss is different for different dyno's. The dyno's I have seen of the 335 dyno make between 250-270 rwhp. As far as a dumbass, I think it is you that fits the description to a "T". Sorry I don't take every Tom, Dick and Harry trying to sell a magazine and their opinions as "gospel" as much as you do. I guess I am a little older and wiser. Was BMW conservative with the hp in the 335? Maybe, but the that also mean the 550 is under rated as well? The reason people will buy the 550 over the 535 is becasue they would rather have the V8 under the hood. No matter how great the new BMW turbo-6 is, it does not have the instant torque and smooth power delivery to redline like the V8. That my friend is why people will continue to buy the 550. Please keep posting and each post makes you look more like an ___.

Ohh, I have a bridge I am selling, check the classifieds.
