I would get the codes read before I drove it again. 30 seconds on a cold start before it overheats seems really odd. As long as it has coolant there is no way it could overheat that quickly.

Water pump failure most likely. Pull the codes to be sure however there are many threads on the forum regarding this issue.
I have a 2008 528i and last year I had the message pop up that the car is overheating. My Auxillary Cooling fan died and didnt turn on when needed. If you get the message check if your fan is actually spinning.
Oh, gosh BMW should recall the waterpumps or atleast do free replacement on them. Just had my 528xi 2008 overheat after few minutes from start. My cooling fan would go full blast even when the engine is stone cold. Had no codes (on a generic code reader), but via INPA got a Waterpump code. Replace the pump+thermostat myself for under 600$. After doing this DIY id say go pay the indy to do it, easy job but time consuming and not very much space to work within, also those hoses are stuck on (it took me 1hr to take off the hose going from radiator to thermostat and there are about 4 others which are equally as corroded). Overall if your fan is going crazy, i can assure you, your waterpump is bad most likely. Whats your mileage on the car?
