I have a 2008 535i automatic. I drove this morning and drove fine. Parked it and went to use it a couple hours later and it won't go in reverse or drive or neutral. Every time I try to go in drive or reverse it will go back to parking. It's got the electric shifter

Just one of many possibilities...do you, by chance, use the manual shift mode often? Not that it is required to have this particular error, but I think it contributes. Check out this thread:

I use the manual mode but not all the time. I'll say 90% its in full auto

I got it to go in reverse one time so I drove it out of the garage then drove it around the block used the sport mode and back to automatic and everything was fine then I stopped and put it in reverse and no reverse so put it in drive and drove back to the house. Made to the house put it in park and when I put it back in drive or reverse the shifter automaticly resets back to park

I'd check that cable in the post I mentioned to see if it is chaffed.
