m/s mode does not work...
any idea what can cause the manual shift mode to not work?
It drives fine in auto, but nothing happens when I push it over to M/S, and I usually use it all the time.
so sad

I have heard the wires under the shifter getting crimped, disconnected or torn. I have seen many posts on this on the E90 Forum. Not sure if this is the same issue or not. Have you taken a look under the shifter to see if anything is disconnected?

Sorry for the delayed response but yes, you're right! looks like a torn wire that engages m/s mode.
Driving in auto mode hasn't been the most exciting driving experience lately, but saved me a lot of gas
I would like to eventually repair this on my own, but wouldn't know where to start.
can someone help me out?

Kind of hard to tell from your photos. Do you see the green wire completely cut? If so, best repair is soldering in a small piece. You'll need to remove some of the electrical tape to get at the one side of green wire and remove insulation from both parts. Slide on some heat shrink tubing. Splice in a small piece of bare wire and twist the green ends over the bare wire. Solder it. The slide the heat shrink tubing over it and use a hair dryer or heat gun to heat it up and shrink the tubing. Use electrical tape to tape everything back up and especially whatever the rubbing part that caused the severed wire in the first place. You should be also to find some YouTube videos on the soldering process.

Thank so much, its a pretty tight squeeze but I may be able to get to those wires. I will attempt to do this, and let you know.
I'm really good with tweezers.

The wires are tiny and I know if I screw this up, I'm screwed!
I probably would have to replace the whole wire that probably runs through the whole car.

Looks like you have room. Here is how I would proceed if it was on my car...
Carefully cut open the plastic conduit an inch or so. That will expose the wires.
Feed a piece of heat shrink tubing over the wires to be fixed and push it back far out of the way.
Trim off half inch or less of insulation on each wire end.
Twist the wire ends together.
Solder them.
Feed the heat shrink tubing back over the soldered joint.
Use a heat gun or hair dryer to shrink the tubing.
Get some split corrugated plastic conduit from the auto parts store and put it over the existing conduit and the wires that have been exposed.
Wrap it up with electrical tape.

There is enough room to work there without removing anything. If you haven't ever soldered anything before, maybe this isn't a good first time. If you really want to do this, you need a soldering iron and some solder. You need some solder made for electrical wiring. You need some heat shrink tubing. Looking at your video, you'll need to cut away some of that friction tape at the left to expose some of the left side green wire. You probably need to splice in a piece and cannot do it all with what remains. That will require two soldered joints. You can find some how to solder videos on YouTube.
I'm not a big fan of low end crimping tools as they don't make the greatest bond, but that would also work. The joint isn't subject to great stress and environment. You can get something at Home Depot or the auto parts store. You'll need a barrel connecter and a crimping tool. No soldering required. You need a barrel connector like this to join the two ends together. Something like the two on the left here:
