My Ride: Alpine White 2006 530Xi (SLD)
Default

Am now selling my '06 530xi and considering 535 vs the 545 vs 550 dilema. As a turbophile, I am definitely poised by the vertigo torque and the duality inherent within the turbo engine. Additionally, I feel that the balance of the lighter 535 wins out against the heavier V8s. Ability to tune the turbo to M5 levels of power is also in the forefront of my mind. M Tech kit is really gorgeous, but I couldn't care less whether it is installed at the dealer, the factory, or my local body shop (who I explicitely trust, based on previous experiences). My only dilema therefore, comes down to whether to opt for the 535xi or "i". I live in the NYC area, so we do get an occasional slippery surface on the road now and then - global warming notwithstanding... I want the "i" for better balance and dry handling, but part of me wants the peace of mind, that comes from having an AWD vehicle. After all said and done though, I'm 85% decided on the 535i. Ride height being another factor - no matter who says what, my 530xi is noticably higher off the ground than an "i", and I noticed the same thing about the 535s as well. Though, maybe not as pronounced, the ride height is obviously higher on the xi, which does take away from the overall look of the car. This goes for sport pk cars as well (mine has it and is still "elevated"), and regardless of various claims made to me by a number of dealers over time.

What's the point of the above ADD rant by yours truly? Simply attempting to share my point of view, while substantiating it with my subjective opinions and observatios. To each - his/her own, right?

Both awesome cars. To me the whole thing is pretty simple. Right out of the box, the 550 should edge out the 535 in performance. So, for a buyer who does not want to or is unwilling to do some mods the 550 is probably the better choice.

If you are willing to do some mods like install a 2 wire piggyback (that adds up to 30 hp & 40 tq) or one of the more advanced versions (that add up to 80 hp & 80 tq) and will make the 535 considerably faster ...then the 535 might be a better choice.

Having choices is a good thing

well i have been reading these forums for quite some time now. just decided to take the time and say hello to everyone. im a previous owner of a 2005 545i and a current owner of a 2008 535i. i jsut find it interesting how everyone in here is such a hardcore v8 fan. . have read a couple of threads of people going at it as to which car is better the v8 or the 535.

i believe both cars are great. i loved my 545i v8 and now i love my 535i.

i love to read e60 performance specs. but havent seen too many here about the newer models. just curious if anyone has tested their 550 or 535 1/4 mile 0-60 etc.

i got myself a gtimer the other day. tried it out a few times. dont know how accurate it is. i did only a couple of quick runs didnt want to get pulled over. got 0-60 in about 5.6 twice and my third run was 5.39.

i know bmw underates their cars just curious to see actual driver specs.
I just got what you just got rid of.
I am so happy with the 545. I will get the next V8 5 series whenever this one is run into the ground. Might be a while.

Here are a few reviews:

Car & Driver

From one of the articles:

"Recent acceleration tests confirm how closely matched?and fast!?these sedans actually are. In a November 2006 comparison of four luxury sedans, we hustled a 550i to 60 mph in a scant 5.2 seconds, a feat we accomplished exactly one year later in an all-wheel-drive 535xi in 5.4 seconds. With nearly 300 fewer pounds, we surmise that the rear-wheel-drive 535i would tie the V-8 model (which, by the way, isn?t available with all-wheel drive) on the drag strip."

On the 7-series the MY '09 engines give

740i: L6 3.0 L TT 326 hp and 450 Nm

750i: V8 4.4 L TT 407 hp and 600 Nm

Nothing can beat cubic inches (or liters).

If one wants these new engines in a 5-series nothing but waiting for the F10 helps.
(Except chipping ones 535i.)

so i picked up the 535i yesterday.....OMG.....im so glad i went wit the bigger engine, shes drives & pulls like a V8 so honestly no need for the 550 and if anybody has doubts about 528 or 535 plz do yourself favor and go wit the TURBINE!!! prior to this decision i also had dilemma between I (sport) or XI....im from NYC as well, not like we live out in the boonies & when it does snow at most 2days we'll be stranded "carless" as streets get plowed within 24hrs.....so to trade up looks & performance vs. 1 week (total) if we get snow i say GO WIT THE "I" SPORT!!!

Just get a set of winter tires and mount them on a second set of wheels. All seasons might work if you have other transportation options. People do notice the SP ride height difference, especially BMW owners. The beauty of the active suspension in the i is no body roll.

Yes, I am biased.

Notice the qualifier underlined above. I believe some tests have shown that the 550i Sport can hustle and muscle its way around a track quicker than the 535i Sport.
