As for the 2008 535i being quicker than the 2007 550i, that is possible. on the 535 1/4 mile (0.4 km) in 15.5s. this is on manual transmission.could be higher depends on driver. maybe get atleast a straight 15s. manual transmission (geartrag) the 545i pulled off a 0-60-mph time of 5.3 seconds and reached the quarter mile in 13.8 sec. personally i feel the 535i has more potential due to it's bi-turbo setup;vishnu chip does wonders. but the 545i can make more power with less stress. either way i'm a die-hard turbo fan.
Unfortunately, the 535i numbers are not around but see this compilation for 335i (200lb lighter and mostly have real tires not like RFT on 535i)

BTW these kids have print out on the track not using G-tech or butt dyno

I haven't push my 530 to the limit yet, have you?

535 would get you speeding tickets any minute unless you take it to trackdays. Why need a V8? many members say that they love the accelerations and that's all? I love accelerations too, there4 I got a superbike for that. I have alway been under 3.5 seconds form 0-62 mph with a 3.6 gallons tank.

To me, driving is cornering not straight blast. V8 does give you extra power to get out of turns but I preferred extra speed gets-in to corners and hold it as much as I could to get out (that's fun). Heavy braking to turns and power out of turns are TV games style no skills required, therefore you need a V8. So far, as many as V8 I've seen on PCH or on hwy are slow like turtles. Occasionally I saw V8 gets quite fast on ramp but then blocking the fast lane almost immediately. I hope these ain't what other members mean cool about V8.

the 535i 1/4 mile in 15.5? im guessing that was a typo maybe you were talking bout the 530i. i know a stock 535i can run the quarter mile in under 14.

interesting article by edmunds http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drive...rticleId=121047.

allthough they are not my favorite. would rather see motor trend or road and track.

one line they caught my attention was "This 2008 BMW 535i test car with an automatic transmission effectively equaled the acceleration of a 2006 BMW 550i equipped with a manual transmission. The 535i's 5.5-second acceleration to 60 mph proves a sedan doesn't need the 550i's V8 engine to be quick"

Yeah, I have stayed away from the 535 vs. 550 debates as I think it is pointless. Everyone buys car based on personal needs and preferences which vary greatly between individuals. I drove both the 535 and 550 before settling on my 550. I freely admit the sports package on the 550 was appealing though you can do this on a 535 as well, just done by the dealer or third party rather than the factory. I also like the new rims on my 550 but again, something easily replicated on a 535. One deciding factor for me was some stories about early 335's having some issues with the twin turbo engine though that seems to have been resolved by the time the engine was introduced in tht 535.

Bottom line, enjoy your car!! Its a great choice and you will be extremely pleased, just as I am by my choice. They are both great cars!
Hear, Hear!! The voice of reason - they are both great cars and enjoy what you liked/purchased

My thought exactly. With this time, the turbos must have been hibernating!

December 2007 Road and Track (page 86) got the following results on a loaded 535i w/ sport pkg;

0-60 = 5.1

skidpad at .91g

Hope this helps.

I never even considered the 535 because it's not available from the factory with an M body kit. I know that I could buy it and have it installed, change the rims etc but why bother?? Since I am leasing it's cheaper and a hell of a lot smarter just to go with the 550.

It's a side bar to a CTS vs G35 test. They were going to test the 535i with these cars but it was $20k more money at $61k. So they did a side bar giving those numbers (they actually tested the 535i along with the other two) and saying that it was worth the additional $$$$$ if you have it. I don't have a copy I can attach but that article was a big reason why I bought the car. In general it seems that the 535i is about .2 sec slower than the 335i to 60mph and in the quarter. It is only about 150lb heavier but has a lower rear end ratio and gets better traction.
