So a clarification of dyno type may help explain your numbers. And yes 20% dirvetrain loss from published hp ratings is high this day in age.
Oh god.... it is 6mt... I don't even know what you mean by automatic... you mean you don't have to manually change... ????

sorry I had just assumed everyone is 6mt... you are right that was a rather late designation! sorry! my bad and was not intentional

I believe DYNOmite -- does that make any sense? I was under the impression that with the degree of loss that this calc was pretty much on point. The problem is that I think every system varies... plus there was NO air movement in these two pulls soo.. hey... I just needed a bench mark so that I can base things on. Recently through the company that I did the dyno at went under water in the flood last month so the dyno is out of commission... any subsequent pulls will be on a new dyno machine... will post when done. Anyone got any good recommendations that are close to ri. We can meet up and see what we get for results... the only change I have not that would effect is h&r air filter and I don't really see that changing things that much...

Yes dynomite is a type of dyno. Im not too familiar with them as they seem to be used on very high end tuner cars and from what I understand & it is used more for this purpose moreso than rwhp calculation. But hey a baseline is a baseline, and if your modding thats all that really matters. I would expect a 300+ whp dyno from a stock 550i with a manual trans on a dynojet. 20% drivetrain loss may be acceptable for an automatic car but not for a manual car. Thats why i questioned the dyno used. Manual trans 540i's typically dyno 260ish whp on a dynojet. Im pretty sure Ive seen manual trans 545i's dyno 280ish whp on a dynojet as well. So you can see why I kinda questioned your 288whp dyno. I know the 550i makes more power in other words.

But the acceleration numbers for the 535 and 550 are very similar. And that's because the 550's V8 is just a tad more powerful than the N54 engine.

Very true. My 535i dynos aroud 320/340. It's really underrated!!

...and the amazing sound of a BMW V8 is nothing like their I-6 engines.

I couldnt agree more. The TT I6's deserve a lot of respect, and the mod potential is awesome. But you just cannot duplicatge the sound, feel, and torque delivery of a V8 imo. I had a 535i given to me as a rental when the 540i I had at the time was having a bent wheel repaired at the dealer (one of the few services that the dealer offers that isnt outragous) and while I loved the car I just wasnt impressed with the power delivery and driving experience compared to what the V8 offers. Probly has alot to do with my back ground in corvettes/mustangs. Hence when I got rid of the 540i I saved some coin and jumed to my current 545i vs a 535i.

You should just like me. My first beloved car was a 1990 Ford Mustang 5.0. Oh how I love low end torque and a big V8. My first BMW was...a 540I Sport. What a V8 that car had and so much grunt off the line.

Yes we are alot alike lol. My first fast car was a 92 5.0 lx mustang. That poor thing took some serious abuse lol. I've also had a 92gt, 90 5.0 lx, 94 gt vert, 95 gt coupe, and why not I'll name the rest of the stangs even though they weren't 5.0's lol....99 gt & 97 cobra. As I got older I really started to appreciate the driving dynamics of a true sports sedan like BMW, I've never looked back. Cannot beat a rwd v8 BMW IMO! Room, class, & speed, 5 series ftw!

Agreed. My Mustang was a 1990 LX 5.0 -- all of the go and none of the show. A true sleeper. I ate up many an unsuspecting car who foolishly thought that I had the base (slow) engine and was easy meat. They got schooled otherwise right quick.
