I guess we will find out soon enough. It would be a real slap in the face, particularly to those who bought 2005s and didn't get a chance to drive them as current model years.

It's one thing if there is a design launch and the new model comes out several months before normal release. This would be expected by the market and people would likely be able to get good deals on end-of-run production. To me it is quite a different matter to keep this secret from people who are making purchasing decisions on high end autos (with no cost relief) and then surprise everyone with an early model year release. I don't know what they would be thinking but suspect it would alienate a lot of current customers.

Do you really think they care? The 'dont care' philosophy has percolated down to the dealership and the SA levels where it seems that they are doing consumers a favor by selling them the cars....just my 0.02.

Yes, here in South Africa and in Europe the new model year starts on 1 January

That's not true. It starts September.
And the upgrades are 05/2's, not 06's, since there are more changes to come...

He expects the new price lists to be published in a week or so.

one more thing, BMW reserves the right to make changes at any time without notice, it says so in every sales brochure's fine print! :bashwall:

I explained last week that "a San Diego" dealer pulled up the MY2006 E60 order sheet for an 530i (USA spec) on the BMW Intranet. This document clearly stated that the MY2006 production starts March 2005.

It made no mention of the engine change...but then it's the order sheet and this detail is not included.

It specifically shows that Active steering is a stand alone option and that the Sport package no longer includes it.

NASCA leather and anthrocite headliner are Priority 1 options.

The Comfort Access was documented for Sept 05 production.

If I could find the time I'd scan the darn document....just ask for it when you are in a dealership....stop the guessing, let's get our facts correct.

anlauf,

-NASCA leather

-Anthracite headliner

-Comfort Access

Wow!! Nice little upgrades. Add these to the new engines and the 5 series is looking even better! Now all we need is the M sport pack option!

I chatted with the sales manager at my dealership today. He looked through his orders to confirm that:

Effective April Production, 530s and 525s are labeled as MY2006. They have the new engines and will arrive in showrooms at the tail end of the summer.
No word on the V8 on the 5 but expect that the 550 will probably start in September production.

This really is not that unusual or surprising. Since production winds down in July and the factories close in August they are simply shortening the MY05 production cycle for the 525 and 530 by about 15 weeks. This makes economic sense too. The new 3 series has the new R6 engines. The engine assembly lines for the inline 6 have been re-tooled and stocked.

From reading this thread, it seems like the new engines are going into cars produced in March or April of 2005. If true, why would it take until the end of summer to arrive in showrooms? Isn't that a bit long between production and arrival?

For what it's worth, I found this news article on GCF from 12/2004 that announces that the new engines will be entering the market in March 2005 along with xDrive. According to the article, the car was supposed to debut at the Detroit auto show. Did it?

I'm curious about this because a friend is ready to order a new 525i (for late March delivery) and would be willing to wait a month or so if he could get the new engines...
