Yes, the filter cover is branded as "Hengst", which means it is German, not Chinese. Also, as Hengst is an OE supplier for BMW, it is not a knockoff. My car has only been serviced by BMW dealers and by myself. I maintain all service records, and I can assure you that the filter cover has never been changed (until now). To validate my statements regarding the filter cover's authenticity as original, here are two additional photos of my cracked oil filter cover (crack identified by red arrows in photos). The exterior clearly shows "Hengst" branding, as well as torque specs for the filter cover and the filter cover's drain plug. The interior shows the BMW logo and BMW part number, in part (note the full part number is 11427521353).
A quick Google search for the BMW part number shows these BMW dealers are selling the filter cover, and the dealers provide photos that show the same exterior markings as my filter cover (links provided to the exact part number).
In addition, the following reputable merchants show pictures for their "Genuine BMW" oil filter covers with the same exterior markings as my filter cover (links provided to the exact part number).
If it helps anyone, my massive oil loss was due to a cracked oil filter cover. Root cause for the crack unknown. This oil filter cover is 13 years old.
Dr. F, I created an account to say thanks for the update! You saved me $340 on a tow truck for a $35 part. I had the exact same symptoms and problem. No recent oil change, but it did get down to about 12 degrees outside, so that may have contributed. Apparently these guys last about 13-14 years give or take. I was unable to tell it was cracked until I removed it. Here's mine:
