You know what, something's cracked in the engine baby, i'll show you a photo E60 - Imgur , there isn't any loss in oil level or oil readings, but there sure is oil in the engine bay.
I would also check out the valve cover gasket bolt. They tend to snap and cause oil to seep through the valve cover. You can check by looking for leaks on the red gasket and checking the tightness of the bolts. I had 2 that I pulled out by hand (magnesium bolts) and had to extract the remaining part from the cylinder head. Wasn't really that hard.
Some general advice: when taking the engine cover off (plastic) leave the back screw off. This way you don't have to keep taking the cabin filter assemblies off when you wanna peak underneath.

You better hope it's not an Accentric Shaft Sensor...But only way you're going to know is to diagnose it with BMW equipment. That is a $300 sensor and is a labor intensive process.
