Did you try the spare key. The key may need to be replaced or buttons replaced.

Was just in your situation a couple weeks ago with my 2006 530xi...

Most likely the rechargeable battery inside the key is shot.

When you lock the car, it's because you have just driven the car and the key is being charged while in the ignition. When you pull it out, it still has a bot of change left. That won't be the case in a couple more minutes.

Main problem is that the key shell is not able to be opened without cutting the plastic. It does not snap together. Some have kind of glued it back together, but that just looks bogus. This place I mention below will sell you a new shell, that does snap together along with a new rechargeable battery. Your existing battery will need to be unsoldered and the new battery soldered back in. The small circuit board inside the key will need to move over to the new key shell. Be careful of the small circuit board inside, you can damage it by mishandling.

Hopefully he will ship to you outside the US...order this:

You need to take a closeup photo of your key blade and email it to the guy, so he can cut the right key. I've used him for both my keys and he is great.

If you want a second key, he can do that too, but you have to send your module in to him:
