Take DTC off so you can control the wheels with the accelerator. This way you can spin them and throw the snow off till your tires reach the road and get grip again.
By the way, check the Wind Noise Thread.. i posted reply in there.

I heard that throwing some weight into the trunk will help with traction.
along with snow tires, of course.

Hi,
I took out the 2006 525i out on snow 2 days and it was crappy.. i have stock tires which supposed to be ALL-SEASON.. and the car is getting stuck everywhere there is snow... it was embarrasing in public when a oold japanese cars were able to drive through that snow just fine.. and i was pulling mine back and forrth, diff sides to get it off the snow lol.. I was holding all traffic since it took like 5mins to just get the damn thing out of snow
I turned on DTC to see if helps.. but nada.. it did nothing! Am I missing something here?
Edit: This is a recent <1mo. old CPO car, so tires are non-Runflats and new.

I had minimal problems with snow driving from beginning to end of the storm, actually quite a bit of fun. just turn the traction control off completely and feather the throttle off and on if the rear wheels get stuck.
my brothers 335i on the other hand, hasnt moved since the first inch fell, car just sits there and spins.

I have a 5.30 with snow tires and it makes a HUGE difference. you cant expect to be driving in snow with the stock tires that BMW gives you. I know how you feel man with those damn snow storms cuz I live in MA.
Also, you have to turn DTC completely off. Pressing it once doesnt completely turn it off. You must press and hold the DTC button for about 3 seconds to turn it off completely. Im guessing that you just pressed it once. Try holding it next time and see if it works.
Another thing I do is carry a couple bags of kitty litter in the trunk. When you get stuck, just pour it around your tires to give you a bit more traction.

No problem in winter snowstorms
Good 225/55 16" wintertyres and some 30 years
of experience driving on ice and snow.
M+S all-season tyres are not wintertyres, there's a huge differance.
But of course a 4x4 would be better, like the 530xi, with good wintertyres.
PS: The extraload in the trunk is old-school. It did work with old RWD's that
had an 1000 pound weighing V8 in the front and the weight distribution was
like 80% front and 20% rear.
I had an old Plymouth Fury '66 with a 318 ci engine in my Army days in the early '80's.
Some 300 pounds of sand in the trunk did help -then!
But the E60 is 50/50.

All season are not the same as winter tires. Get winter tires. And then you'll be able to laugh at the Japanese FWD cars when the lose traction and steering all at the same time... at least with a RWD you'll have one or the other in most cases -- if you use the right tires.
GET SNOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent point, Imola. My E60 handled the recent Chicago snow with ease. In fact, it was noticeably better than our FWD A4 for the reasons you described. Additionally, the 50/50 weight distribution makes the car feel stable at speed. Our comparatively nose heavy Audi tended to plow and slide. It was particularly challenged with moderate inclines at medium to high speeds. Odd really.
The only negative for the E60 was gaining inital traction from a standstill in deeper snow. It seemed slower than other FWDs.
Thanks to member on the board who recommended snow tires over all seasons. YOU WERE RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!
