2005 545i burning lots of oil
Hey guys,
So almost a year ago I had problems with my 05 545i leaking oil so I took it to my independent mechanic and he replaced my valve cover gaskets, and alternator bracket gasket and the car hasn't leaked oil since. I had these gaskets changed at around 115k miles and I just hit 130k miles a few days ago. A few weeks ago i've noticed that my car seems to be spitting out smoke a lot, every day on my commute. When i stop at a stoplight and then put the car back into motion, there is heavy smoke that comes out of the exhaust for about 3 seconds. I figured it was due to my aftermarket exhaust (which is really just a straight piped, free flowing quad exhaust that I had installed almost a year ago), however after checking my oil levels today I noticed that I was about 5 cups low. Any idea what this could be or how I can fix it?
Thanks

Wow I have a 07 550i that I just got out of the shop that was doing the same thing and I got a valve stem seals and alternator job. I think the same thing you had done mine had 119k miles plus I replaced the motor mounts, rack and pinion and sway bar links. Anyway no leaks no smoke. But now I'm worried that it may come back like yours. But every indy shop says it's common in 545i and 550i

My 545i has about 110k or so, and I also had all my gaskets changed last year. I was wondering when my stem seals may go, and it sounds like soon. I heard it can be an expensive job, but I will probably have them done when it happens. I really love my 545!!

Well I started getting smoke out of my exhaust at about the late 117k time. Sitting at long lights or stuck in traffic it would happen. I had to put in a quart about every week and a half then I said gotta get it done. The dealer wanted 7 to 8k. My indy shop charged 3k out the door.
