Ok here is my car this morning with a bad start up. I waited 5 minutes on high rough idle. This is what heppands when you turn it off and then turn it back on. My car will do this 2/10 times on cold starts.

sounds to me, either the temp sensor or an o2 is not sending the right signal back, and the car is not getting out of startup rpms.

Some times the internal circuit fails on the MAF. Cleaning the sensor will do nothing if an electrical problem is the issue.

Default thermostat replaced

Hey Guys
So my friday was spent changing out thermostats. I got my first replacement part from Autozone (bad idea) . got the autozone part in and got the emission high light immediately (so im like i need to get the code cleared) i drive to autozone to use a code scanner and the car overheated. i got eh drive a reduced load to cool engine just as i get to my house(2 miles round trip) . crap i got a bad part. i called my local BMW dealership and they had a thermostat in stock. i removed the crap autozone part and got the genuine bmw thermostat installed . i started the car up and no idrive messages and it runs great. drove around for a while no over heat no surging idle . so the thermostat fixed it for my car.
good luck with your car .

on another note : i tried to bring up the water temp in the hidden menu . after five or six failed attempts to get to the right spot i drained the battery down enough to shut off the passenger restraint module . So now i need a new battery(needed a new one anyways) and to get the passenger restraint module reset again!

So am I supposed to drain the battery so the car can relearn or is the changes supposed to be right away?

I just installed a new thermalstat and there is no changes. So either that was not the problem, or my car needs to relearn.

Any suggestions..?

sounds like thermostat was not the problem.
no you should not have to drain battery to relearn.

Laszlo
like turbo said i would not drain the battery. doing so would bring on a set of new issues. bummer the thermostat didnt fix it for u. did you have the faults code read from a BMW mechanic? i know it sucks but you may need to take it too one to scan the car and pull the BMW fault code to be sure. im pretty luck their is a couple of local BMW specialty shops in my town so i dont have to go to a dealership all the time. i just ordered a bmw can bus obd2 cable from amazon so i can start coding (still cheaper than going to a dealership or local mech) .
