I agree (and went through a similar experience). I would go as far as to say the gas mileage will be identical for those who look for a little performance.... You have to push the 530 so much harder for signs of life that I think the gas mileage will be about the same between both cars.
I havent researched; however, I suspect the 545 will have better resale too!

Not to dismiss finances, but I would recommend getting an '05 545i (post week 9). I am not sure what the price difference is, but if you are planning to keep the car for a while, the initial price difference vs. an '04 may be "paid for" by lower repair bills over time. From my experience, first year German cars are killers (vs. 2nd and 3rd year models) in terms of long-term repair costs.

Ya know, I'm gonna have to disagree with you on the 530 "isn't too slow" comment... I was given an 07 530 as a service loaner and it was a pig compared to my 05 545... that's just my opinion, it was just a lot slower when I punched it. I'm used to a lot more go.
Personally, I'd go with the 545.

I agree with you that the 530 is really sluggish compared to the 545. However, I was referring to it as a car in general. The 530 on it's own is a not really a slow car. The 530 holds it's own when it comes to cars in the same size and engine class.

My Ride: 2004 530i stock.
2000 Jeep Wrangler non-stock =)
I'd say V8 aslo. The 530 isn't slow depeding on what you've been driving, but the V8 won't make you regret having less power =)

Hey guys i either want to get an 04 530 or 04 545 and i was wondering if u guys could help me decide. I hear the 530's are pretty slow so thats why i was thinking of the 545 but then someone told me the 545 gives more problems for the 2004 year. I know its the first year they came out, but i hear the 545 has more problems and even though their both going to be under factory warranty because im buying both used at about 35k miles i dont want the hassle of keep going to the dealer or buying small parts for it. Let me know what u guys think.
thx comrades.

You might want to look for the Sports package too. The 545 sport would likely have Dunlop runflats, which have been a major problem; but at 35K they have probably been changed, and would be changed again for free by the dealer when weird wear sets in (<40K miles) while still under warranty.
Good luck,
Ray Hull
