19.01 side effects
Still enjoying the stability of my last CIP u/g - more than one month without a crash and counting, personal record is between 2-3 months - when one of my co-workers said to me:
"Your car is funny, it beeped 2 or 3 times when I was near by in the garage."
My first thought was "damn, I left the keys in the ignition again, the guy is referring to the hourly chime I have on", but no, keys were right on my desk.
So later on I went to the garage to just before 10:00 AM. Got in, keeping the key in my pocket, and waited.
At 10:00, bingo! Good old chime, loud and clear.
So it flashed to me the other "improvement" I had noticed: radio was much quicker waking up after turning the key, varying between some seconds to instant switch on.
I think its the same slow boot process, with an old trick: power the accessories on as soon someone opens one door or unlocks the car, to get some seconds of boot lead time, and don't power them off when the key is removed, wait for complete shutdown (15-20 minutes).
They did it before on older CIP versions with the pro phone. Now they've included the radio (and the chime) in this kind of "fast" boot process.
So beware all chime lovers: your cars will beep to strangers when parked, until they completely shutdown.
BTW, am I the only one who thinks active steering is lighter again ?
Cheers,

I don't "power-down" anything, I just remove the key as everybody else.
What BMW has changed is the code that powers-down the accessories after you remove the key, otherwise I would not be hearing the chime as described. That means that at least the sound system (amps/speakers) stays on until complete shutdown.
I guess most of the systems are powered-off at key removal to preserve battery, but I could be wrong.

I think that's right, isn't it called "consumer mode" or something? If you shut down and lock the car, but unlock and restart within about 15 minutes, the settings you had at shut down (e.g. seat heaters etc) are still as you left them (i.e. seat/wheel heaters, radio/cd etc) so some of the systems are still powered and functioning. If you power up after that time the car restarts as if from cold. Car also boots up veryquickly when restarting in this mode compared to cold starts.

[/quote]Oh, I though you meant you powered down when you said: "and don't power them off when the key is removed, wait for complete shutdown (15-20 minutes)." More specifically, I thought you meant wait until complete shutdown occurs before powering off.

I dont think its all the speakers that stay on... I think its just the "chime" speaker locaked under the steering column that stays on... you know the one that dings when you leave your key in the ignition... or ding to tell you to put on your seatbelt or ding if you leave the car in neutral (SMG only)

Good point, I'm assuming that complete shutdown cures it, but one never knows...
I'll take a look and report in 15 minutes (17:45 local time now).
