What is the aspect ratio I would need? Do you think I would have enough rim protection. Thanks

Hoog23 - do you ever park on the road? The reason I ask is that 245/40/18 is still a little low to avoid getting curb rash right on your rims. I used 235/35/19 for a bit of last winter and totally f'ed up my rims and tires (since the snow covered curb makes it hard to delineate between the snow and the rock).
This year I am back to 225 50 17.

While I agree that using 17" rims and the 225/50 tires offers best protection from potholes and bad roads I think the OP may be looking to fit snows on original 18" rims. That being the case 245/40x18 is the correct size. I use all-season 245/40 x 18 tires on my 530xi and have had no difficulty driving through 6+ inches of snow and even driving out of more than a foot of standing snow to clear my driveway so it could be plowed clean.
