Does anyone remember the early E38's and E34's V-8's with the rough idle issues? It was due to the lining they used in the cylinders. If I remember correctly, the cylinder walls were deteriorating causing a rough idle. BMW was replacing short blocks under a campaign. Could possibly be another poor engineering design. I would keep pressing the issue. Maybe with enough complaints, they will open an investigation leading to a campaign

Another option to consider if you have the time, is to buy a complete salvage vehicle and use just the motor. Then either sell the rest of the car or part it out. You could find one for les than $16K I'm sure.

Thats the ones, I think they were the M60 motors. They used Alusil cylinder liners that were degrading. The updated ones had a Nikasil liner.

Other way... nikasil was replaced by alusil. Note that it was apparently the specific formulation used in those vehicles that led them to be problematic - Porsche used nikasil for years w/o incident.

Things are finally moving forward. lets just say bmw is no help at all. Lots of hand ringing and bull$h1t answers to direct questions. I wonder if Jim O'Donnell, the president of BMW USA knows how this stuff gets handled. Lets just say that the performance of the local dealer and BMW USA customer service is not what builds the confidence of the enthusiast market, evidently they don't really give a $h!t.
Anyway enough ranting, the guys at ascwarranty.com have been much more reasonable to deal with than BMW USA and the local dealer Swope BMW.They are actually trying to be helpful. BMW USA could take a page out of their book. They have agreed to pay their portion of the repair so I am finally getting on with it. I am looking for a motor now and Autobahn BMW Louisville will do the work. Autobahn BMW Louisville is GREAT to work with!!!
