Changed mine myself at 1,200. Dissected the oil filter and found a half dozen or so small pieces of metal. Plan on changing the oil every multiple of 5,000 miles myself. I like working on the car. Probably overkill, but fun.
Sometimes, it's not a matter of 5K miles or 15K miles, but it's a matter of peace of mind. Changing oil at 5K miles would make you feel better. But to some, it'd make them feel worse because of more expenses. Either way, it's OK
My Toyota Solar has oil changed every 3K miles and still goes strong until now 155K miles.
I plan to change oil on my 530i every 5K miles from now on. Warranty and Maintenance Period have been expired on the way I drove to SoCal greet and meet.

Understood, but the point is to flush out the junk (metal shavings, etc) after break-in.
after the brake in period at some 2000-3000 km's.
To my own car I just added 0,6 litres of Castrol LL 0W 30 at 11,000 km's.
It would have not needed that but...
To pa550:
Buy yourself a old MoPar '69 - '70 440 cid sixpac.
You'll have all the fun fixing and burning...
