Ehm, did you start backing up?
My car allowed me to put in reverse but once I was rolling it put the trans back into 'P' (with door open/ajar). Yes I have Sport auto with paddle shifter.

I had the exact same experience.

Did you try to accelerate or just let the idle move the car? I'll have to try it again when I think of it but I'm sure that the car switched into park by itself given a specific set of conditions...
I did definitely take the foot off the brake and step on the gas pedal. As I noted, my speed remained very low because of space constraints but I definitely pressed the gas pedal to see if it would move back into P. I'll try another test tomorrow in an area where I can get above 2 MPH for more than 10 ft!

I don't remember the exact speed but I remember doing my test as I was halfway in and halfway out of my garage so I know it happens at a fairly low speed and at a short distance...

Well, this got to be in manual but who read them right

OK, I tried to play with these a few times with initial conditions, seattbelt on, door close, put tran in reverse:
1) with door open only and seat belt on, car will roll backward with light gas and brake off.
2) with door open and seat belt off, trans will go back to 'P'
3) with seatbelt off and door close, same as 1.

So there you go, you have start from my initial condition and scenario 2 to get the trans move to park. else all system go.

Rudy asked what SIB I was looking at (in a post a while back) that said the driver's seat belt needs to be engaged. The SIB is 25 02 07 (Gear Shif Mechanism) Nov 2007, which I found by doing a search on this forum.

The specific paragraph is, "Please remind the customer that the drive position D or R gear request from the GWS shifter will be ignored (the transmission will stay in park) if the driver's door is not fully closed and the driver's seat belt is not latched."

#1 Well that's what I'm seeing, I always had the seatbelt on. Did it again this morning, light gas and the car does not move back into P...

Thanks for posting the bulletin number. Actually, the number you posted was originally from 9/07 and a new one that supersedes it came out in 11/07. The new one is SI B 24 19 07 and can be seen here:
