Recently upgraded from a 525 with standard seat to 550 sport with comfort seats also and they are a big improvement. They are the most comfortable and adjustable seats I've seen in a car barring the 7 series. I'm 6'6" and there are not many seats I fit in comfortable, especially in the Japanese brands which are pitiful in comparison.

I love my comfort seat. Unfortunately my wife doesn't. She can't seem to find a good seat position.

I removed my wallet and outerwear every time I get in the car, otherwise it be so uncomfortable to drive. I guess it's my problem then. I'm so use to smaller seat on the e46 m3 that fit me just perfect. The e60 seat are a little bigger and harder for me to get use to.

I think there are a number of seats and comparing diferent year models is difficult. I just switched my std semi-electrics for a set of 2008 multi-contour seats and I have never had a car with better seats. Just perfect!
I think the multi-contours replaced sport and comfort seats on later models? I can tighten the side supports and it feels almost like Sparcos or so, and readjust to make them feel like good comfort seats.

sport seats are kinda overrated IMO also. i am 6'6" and having seats that really grip you like those sport seats do just make you sore and achy after a long drive. the sport seats in the 3 series are even worse.
one thing i would suggest to the OP is taking out your wallet when you drive. that's really helped my back pains in the past.
