When I am at a red light, I generally put my gear shift in neutral. When I do this, I notice a rattling sound when the clutch is NOT pressed...when the clutch IS pressed, the noise goes away. It sounds like some might call "gear rattle" as it is coming from down in the gear shifter and can be reduced somewhat by wiggling the gear shifter around. It's really not that loud, and it doesn't sound like a problem, but I'm just wondering if anyone else experienced this? My '95 525i 5-speed did not do this.

I have a 525i 6 speed manual.
I took my car to 3 different BMW dealership regarding same "rattle noise" issue.
Dealers said it is normal, because all other manual BMW cars at the lot made same sound.
My previous 325i 6 speed manual and 350z 6 speed manual also made the same noise.
It really was bothering me, but I learned to live with it.
You should definitely take it to dealer and see what they say, and let me know if you actually get some repair on this issue.

I do not have this problem with my 550 manual, nor have I experienced it in any of the 5ers that I've owned (all manuals). I agree that it is likely not a serious thing, but I don't think it's a normal thing either.

Oh man... sounds like a MINI issue... many MINIs had this issue... including mine but it was never a problem... clutch was strong... if you depress the clutch half way and let it back up the rattling goes away...
I forget what the final verdict was for the MINIs... I think people just finally accepted it as a characteristic...

This noise is present when the clutch is NOT pressed...and the noise is not present when the clutch IS pressed. I also wonder just how many people with the 2008 535s actually have manual transmissions...I've never seen another one, and mine was the only on the lot when I got it.

Ya... I know what you're talking about... thats what I said I think... depressed = pressed down. AKA clutch engaged the noise goes away... Like I said... I had that same problem with the MINI... but since there was no fix that I heard of from the MINI community and it did not affect performance I didnt care.
check www.mini2.com or www.northamericanmotoring.com and search for the issue if you want to read more about it...
MiamiPhill: Hahah did you see my post... its common problem on the Old R53 MINIs

Is sounds to me like you all are describing a problem with your clutch release (through-out) bearing......
