When I start up my car, it revs up to 1000~1100rpm smoothly, with no sense of shakiness or rocking of the car.

However, when it idles down to 600rpm, it starts to become rough, and it's felt on my seat and the steering wheel.

The BMW service center here has recommended setting the idle rpm slightly higher (eg., 800rpm),
and this has proven to be effective to some people with same problems.

Is this rough idle a known problem with 08 528i N52 engine?

Is it okay to set the idle rpm a little higher? What could be drawbacks..?
I don't feel comfortable with interfereing such settings.

Thanks.

i have the same issue...when the car is going, it's smooth with no problems, but at idle, you can hear and feel the vibrations in the steering wheel and seats...

coolhand -- did the dealer ask you to set the idle point yourself? if so, how would you go about doing this?

Setting idle rpm little higher can only be done in BMW service centers, not by individuals.

But I fear this might cause some bad effects to the engine.. and I feel somewhat uneasy doing so.

I have done about 1000 miles.. maybe I should drive a little longer see if it improves.. but people with the same problem have reported no improvement even after an extended driving

I highly doubt raising the idle a bit will cause undue harm to your engine. The only bad "effects" of raising idle by 100-200 rpms are increased exhaust emissions and fuel consumption (very little increase). On the plus side, you'll get a smoother running engine at all revs. Lastly, keep in mind that such an adjustment can also aid your throttle response from a stop. If you have a rough idle, chances are its throttle response could be a little poor or slightly hesistant at 600 rpm vs. 800 rpm.

My '07 with the same engine idles at 650-750 with an average of 700rpm. It has not changed since it was new and I have 8000 miles on it now. It is as smooth as can be.

First sign that either your hd pump or your injectors will break. Have fun I had it already eight times in three month. I am sitting in France in a hotel and wait for the truck from Germany to pick up my LCI and to bring a replacement car. Third breakdown in two weeks. German forums show that many share this fate. The HPI technology is absolutely unproven und unripe. I will test a LEXUS GS next week I need a reliable car for business this is not the ultimate driving but nightmare rather.

I'm not sure what HPI technology is, but it may be High Pressure Injection. I don't read of many fuel pump failures on the non-turbo engines over here....quite rare in fact. Most of the fuel pump failures are on the twin-turbo engines. I did have the injectors replaced on a 2003 530i that I had under a recall. The whole thing was done in under 30 minutes They weren't broke, they just changed manufacturers so they did a recall on them and changed them out.

Correct it is. And BMW got a severe problem with it. So severe that they cannot deliver pumps and injectors over here for weeks. But as NA is their most important market, while they milk Germany with most cars sold, they will take better care of you folks.
