Question

just picked up 04 545i and fuel economy is horrible. I looked at my computer and it is telling me 14.5mpg and 20mph are my averages?! Is this normal? My 01 GS430 V8 4.3L 300hp averaged 21mpg!!! I made appointment with dealer to do replace dash wood that is cracked under warranty, check door seal squeaks and MPG consumption!! What everybody else averages?

A bit higher, particularly on the highway. But not by much. Also, the computer is not very accurate, try computing it the old fashioned way by computing after fill ups versus how miles you got on that tank.

I Agree completely with the self calculation. Mine is off the other way - the computer usually says I am 5-6 mpg higher than what I actually get. The dealer has never been able to solve, even with playing with the cal value.

I have a 6-spd manual and get on a strict highway trip 25-26 mpg (usually averaging 75-80mph, setting the cruise at 80). My daily average which is 85-90% highway (occasional congestion) and 10-15% hard city is around 20 - 21 mpg.

I am actually pretty impressed with my mileage. On the same daily commute/driving, I used to get about 30-33mpg on a 120hp Saturn. Of course, my around town starts where much slower and not as much fun.

Your city will significantly be affected by your foot. But if can take a trip and set the cruise, you should be seeing fairly decent mileage.

My drive to work (90% of my driving) is 0-30-0. I'm at 12.7MPG on this tank of gas. On the highway I always get 25MPG.

My 2003 GS430 was around 16MPG and 24MPG respectively (drive to work and highway).

The worse mileage on the BMW is a small price to pay for the increased enjoyment. God I hated that GS.....

I pretty consistently get around 20MPG in mixed driving with some occasionally heavy acceleration. 26MPG on the highway averaging around 80MPH, somtimes maybe higher. If you are getting less than that you either have a problem with the engine or computer that calculates your MPG. And that's easy to narrow down by doing your own mileage calculation.

Heck, I'm getting 15mpg, but it is all city driving. I guess I could ride my bike to work(0.9 miles), but that wouldn't be as much fun.

Check your tire pressure, and consider running it at the "over 100mph" pressures. They should be listed in the manual.

...Probably because the car never gets warm.

Mine barely does on my 2.4 mile commute.

Sounds pretty normal. 20mph... you're not even moving... sounds like all city its a big car to lug around stop and go. Maybe you should have gotten a GS 450h
