I am considering purchase of a 2002 5 Series 530i. Mileage is just under 112,000. It's a one-owner, Southern California car with pristine CarFax. Purchase would be from a BMW dealer that has been servicing the car since 2008.

I'd appreciate your thoughts about this particular model. Are there any recall problems or other mechanical issues I should be aware of? What is a reasonable life-expectancy (in terms of mileage) for this car?

And any other words of wisdom would be welcome!

Many thanks!

The early 6 cyl 5 series were pretty bullet proof with the usual problem areas:
  • Cooling system - plastic radiator and reserve tank - ensure they have been replaced recently.
  • Front suspension - esp control arms and center link - same as above
  • Automatic transmissions - should be considered a maintenance and replacement item at 100K miles - if transmission oil and filter were serviced recently and car driven responsibly you may expect to go the distance! If it's a manual it's a fun car to drive!
Price Price Price - dealer will probably want more that the average market price for a clean example! Hold your ground if it's a clean, well cared for car!

Good luck with your decision!
