My Ride: 2002 BMW 525tds E39 2.5l
Default 02 525tds E39 - New owner. Car Issues

Hi all
New to the forum and looking for help with my purchased 2002 525tds 2.5l E39. I live in Portugal and bought the car second hand

i have owned the car for around 12months it drove fine but then started to play up. I will give you a list of the issues i am facing at the moment.

•When driving the car and changing gear the car will have a delay of the power coming through, i will sometimes have to press the accelerator multiple times to stop the car from stalling - this happens a lot through the lower gear changes

•During journeys the car will just cut out completely and die (obviously dangerous). Problem occurs every so often

•After a journey, and then returning back to the car to start it the dash lights will come on as normal, glow plug light goes out but when turning the ignition nothing and all lights go out on the dash. Again this problem doesnt occur every journey

At first i thought it was a bad connection on the car battery causing these issues. I would wiggle the positive cable and the car would function and start. I have now firmly secured the positive battery cable but the problems are still occuring

My brother in law hooked up his Ethos Snap-on code reader and cleared a lot of faults, but the reader would not connect to the ecu. Instead it stated the following - see attached picture.

I checked the DME yesterday to see if it was corroded or damaged. All the pins and the circuit board looked clean and fine. I did remove the blue relay and cleaned the pins and put it back in. I niticed when i turned the key to the first position the fuel gauge played up and went to half tank - when the diesel was low. It corrected itself after turning the car off/on about 4 times.

I am at a loss off where to start and am hoping you fellow e39 diesel owners could shed some light on what i should look at before looking at buying a new ignition switch, fuel filter, fuel pump etc.
