I've always liked the E34 M5. Although I prefer V8s, it does sound great.
Check this video out: E34 M5 vs 911s at the Ring I can't believe I found it. There is a 2nd one of a whole lap if I can find it. Its a great intro to the Nurburgring (from the original start) and the E34 M5.

Edit: Here it is, still one of my favorite 'Ring videos:

I like the video, except for the commentary from the passenger. Annoying.

As for the E34 M5, they are nice cars, especially when they are well cared for. They like to be driven hard, you can't putz around town with them. It needs to see redline occasionally. Be careful though, they are quite fast.

I'm just expressing my opinion, but I totally ADORE the E34. That said, if I wanted to buy an older M5, I'd first look to the E39, because you'll DEFINITELY get more fun driving that thing. I mean, it's like a drift king, that can precision-carve any apex. Best of both worlds, and you could probably find one for almost a bargain these days. If I could, I'd own two of each, so I can't decide. If you like it, and want it, GET IT! I'll have nothing but respect for you, personally!

The E34 and E39 M5's are a couple of my favorite cars of all time, true timeless classics. If you can get it and maintain it - go for it, but I am not sure I'd use it as my daily driver.
