Well, I live the only state where radar detectors are illegal (Virginia), so if I were to ever get one, it would have to be completely hidden with no traces whatsoever - hence my interest in a solution that would integrate into the iDrive screen.

I apologize for bagging on this install and hope no-one takes it personally, but there is a better way.

I don't know, you guys are going to all that work and you can still see the unit. The display module is NOT a clean install. It's ok for a Mustang, but not a 60k luxury sedan.

I don't know much about the Valentine, but my suggestion would be to look at the Escort or Bell Tronics built-ins. Definately more work, but much cleaner. The radar receiver is mounted behind the grill. The laser detector/jammers can be mounted next to the air-dam for the breaks and on the rear lic. plate. With speaker, LED and remote mute, you do not need the control/display except to program the unit and it can be completely hidden.

If you want to see the control display, it is smaller and can go in the little cubby hole (provided you do not have nav). I don't even use mine.

Anyways, just a suggestion that the job can be done cleaner and a cop will probably never know you have the unit.

I had one confiscated in DC around 15 years ago--was at corner of M and Wisconsin, light turns green and I proceed through intersection and cop behind me pulls me over, says they're illegal and confiscates it. Gives me ticket and tells me if I pay the ticket I can get it back. Paid ticket and had to go to a scarey part of DC to get it back...

I lived and worked in Virginia (Norfolk/VA Beach) for several years always using my V1. Anytime I thought I was close to being pulled over I would remove power source. I usually had a Florida drivers license (residence in Florida, worked in Virginia) so I would always claim that it was simply too difficult to remove from windshield but of course was not using it. Stopped in safety/license checks by each of State, County and City troopers/police. Each one would say " you know someone might ticket you for that" but they never actually did it. I also worked on DoD installations where they are illegal (all states) and only one time did I have to talk my way out of removal and that was when it was in the glovebox. It was 9/14 - three days after 9/11 when tensions were high and the guards were hyper. But still nothing came of it. Because of the illlegality of detectors, Virginia troopers do not use any stealth techniques in their use of radar unlike many of the other states, especially Maryland.

Don't get hung up too much on stealth just because you are in Virginia. At least get started on protection and go stealth as time permits.

Just a recommendation, your experience ....blah, blah ... may be different (my disclaimer)

In my opinion, the best, most stealth install has to be the one 2004RType did! Clearly his install is the one that others should be measured by!!

See for yourself...
