O.k. gents, this may my seem a little odd but please bear with me, (and try not to laugh ) I'm trying to check my coolant level but I can't get the cap off of the expansion tank. I turn the cap counter-clockwise with the engine cold of course, the cap will turn about one-and-a-quarter turns and then jam up to the point that I feel like I'm going to break something if I continue to force it to turn anybody ever experience this? By the way: I also tried to open up the oil filler cap, guess what, that one would not budge either!!! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?! should I just keep twisting? I'm REALLY afraid I might break something since NEITHER should require that much force applied, at least such was the case with every other car I've owned, though none of those cars were bimmers

Not sure about BMW's and I'm work right now so I can't check...but, on most cars the radiator/coolant cap will turn about a 1/4 turn and then you need to press down and turn more to get it off. Kinda like some of the child proof prescription pill bottles where you have to press and turn.

I know what you are referring to but this is different, this is a plastic expansion tank with a large, plastic, screw-down cap, that is designed to just twist off, or so it appears to be. What you are describing is the standard metal radiator cap that you push down and turn until it stops, then repeat the process, and lift the cap off. This is what you find on most japanese and american cars, but not on this one. This cap just seems to get stuck after turning it a few times. Thanks though.
