Hi guys just joined the forum after many reads. maybe someone can help me out. I am looking for a post that I read before. It had a full description of a rotor change including pics and tips. Particularly of where to lube up the calipers and the such. I am going to do my first rotor change tomorrow. Got new allen nuts for the rotors and a new allen socket to minimize the chance of stripping them. Any suggestions or tips from you experienced folk. Thanks a lot. I will take pics and post after a successful installation

Wow, thanks a lot. This is exactly what I was looking for. What does TIS stand for. I have to go check out the rest of these. Is it possible to buy these or are they just floating around. Once again thanks.

I'd recommend to get/borrow a manual impact driver to remove the allen nuts, mine were seized and an allen key was just chewing them up.

Yeah, next time no need for a new thread, just PM Gene - he can point you in the right direction (better than Wiki). Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for the advice. I was unable to get one. I used a deadblow hammer and an L allen wrench. I gave it some taps with the deadblow. Basically same thing as an impact driver I just had to be more careful.

OK finished the job. Pads and rotors. Tools required were: , 17 mm deep socket for lugs, 6mm allen for allen bolt holding rotor, 7 mm allen wrench for guide bolts in brake housing, 18 mm socket for brake housing bolts. 10mm wrench or deep socket(maybe 11) for fluid bleeding nipple, rubber deadblow hammer to smack things around, wirebrush and 3M scouring pad to clean rust once rotor is removed. Gloves to keep hands clean. I did not use them and I regret it. Large screwdriver to remove and install clips. Something to compress the caliper in order to get rotor out. Channel locks clamps. Up to u. Remember that you might damage caliper. Brake fluid and brake squeak stuff. Don't forget the torque wrench. No I do not know the torques. Yeah goodentight. I am suree someone here knows them. I believe that is all that you will need. I used an impact wrench to remove lugs and I regretted it. one bolt was so tight that it broke the extension that I was using. I ended up scraching up my rim. I used regular exetension insread of impact one. Suprisingly my deepsocket impact socket also shattered. I thought that was the end but I was able to remove it using old school cross lug remover. I also put the rotors on wrong side. Slotted rotors are directional. So basically I did it twice. I uploaded picture showing direction of rotation. Good luck

My Ride: I have an 05 545i. It's a manual with a few options. This is my first BMW but I don't know how I'll ever be able to switch to something else.

Damn, sounds like you had some trouble, but good to hear you completed the job. You live and learn, at least for future reference I will know this about the slotted rotors, I too thought they were the same on both sides.

Now post up some pics!

TIS = Technical Information Service, which is BMW's authorized repair software that is for dealers only. Unfortunately you cannot buy TIS you just have to search around for the different jobs, or be lucky enough to find a download of the DVD.

BMW TIS Download

The torque values are listed on the last pages of the TIS pages that are referenced by GENEaTALS.
