Guys, this might be of help. I've spent a lot of time looking for it. Not to mention how much time I spent on pressing tacho button without any luck.

5 Series (E60) 2004-onwards
Can only be reset if oil life is below 80% and "!" is present next to indicator lamp. Turn ignition to the "ON" position. Press and hold button to the left of
the speedometer until first item is displayed (approx. 10 seconds). Press button until desired indicator is displayed. Press and hold button until
RESET? is displayed. Press and hold button again for at least 3 seconds. Turn ignition off.

Mine oil was due by 500km. Red warring on. The provided procedure doesn't work. I was told that on top of the info above you have to reset oil 1K km before red warning on. Any one has any similar experience?

 

Confirmed by BMW. When the red oil warning comes up, service menu is locked and a service PC is needed to reset it. Good part is that BMW Nuremberg did it free of charge for me this time. Normally they charge 50 Euro for it.

To cut it short.

Make sure you reset service warnings before they turn red or get ready to see your BMW garage.

 

Thanks for the information ,but at what mileage does the red warning appear?

 

That's only to see the software versions, options and hardware installed. You dont change anything in there.

 

Mine reads -800 miles and I followed the instructions and was given the option to reset. I'd sure give this a try before shelling out money for resetting a maintenance indicator.

 

As I have already commented,unless we know when the warning will change to red,there is little that can be done about it.
If the oil warning is red,you cannot scroll through all the service symbols, it only shows oil.I had to experiment with the procedure to carry out a reset,so a visit to a dealer was not necessary.I eventually went into iDrive where oil service was first in the list and selected the next item (brake fluid).I then continued with the odometer button-press procedure which was only successful when I did an additional quick-press which then brought up "reset".The miles then went from _ _ _ to 19000 miles as the button was held in.I then went out of iDrive ,back in, and oil service was displaying 19000 miles.So, if at first you don't succeed ,try,try again!

P.S.Don't believe all that a dealer tells you.

 

Guys, let me say that i love this forum because every time i have a question in my mine that i think is ridiculous, someone else has already asked it. Let me get to the point, my oil service indicator was showing 0 mls in the i-drive and in red. I wanted to know if i could reset it before going to the dealer. The reason is if i couldn't, i would shell out the $140 for oil change service because i wanted it reset. I just got home from work, ran through the steps listed in the earlier posted and the date is back up to 15000 mls. I'll go to BMW tomorrow to only get the oil and filter and change it myself. Thanks again guys/gals, you just saved me $90. The only BMW dealer can reset the oil change indicator when in red is total BS.

Depends on the soft version I was told. Good it worked for you but it didn't work for me (oil -900), its a fact. In most cases, instead of service menu I was getting a screen with just (---). Even if, for some reason, after many attempts, I got service screen it was going off after 2 seconds. BMW technician tired using tacho method too and ended up nowhere. They had to connect it to the computer.

P.S Now I get the service screen with no problem.

 

I just changed the oil on my 04 530i without any problems resting the computer following the instructions from kev525, thanks.

 

Sorry if i offended you, but that was not my intension. I just wanted to let the group know that even if the indicator turns red, one can still reset it without going to the dealer. As we all know, these cars get very touchy at times and I had no problem resetting the indicator on mine. Glad to hear every thing worked out of you.
