Once you are done, post a few pics! Its always nice to see others who have done the same thing. You'll be happy with the Homelink features.

Is there anyway I can activate the "clown-nose" in a car without the alarm ? Or does car without the alarm miss the bulb in the clown-nose?

E60Sim,
I read some discussions about this last year at Bimmerfest.com and I'm pretty sure the clown-nose can be activated by the dealership without an alarm installed. The question is whether or not they are willing to do so. Alternatively one of the guys in the forums more familiar with coding may be able to advise you if this can be done via OBDII with NCSExpert. Try PM'ing one of them based on this and be sure to let us know your findings.

Cheers and good luck!

Can someone on this thread please supply the BMW part number for the Mirror 'with' Alarm, HomeLink, Auto-dimming, AND the compass ??

Getting ready to go shopping for one of these, and perform upgrade to this great thread...
and want to make sure of what part number to look for.

THanks,

Going off of this site http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...29&hg=51&fg=40 there doesnt appear to be one for an 06 with a compass, that doesnt mean anything tho. Did you look into that classified ad I linked to you in the other forum? That one should work fine and be a lot cheaper than going to the dealer.

530i-bie,
As ETNav382 suggests you can find these mirrors in the classifieds, on Kijiji or most certainly on eBay. Just search for E60 rear-view mirror with homelink and compass.

Did the mirror you found have the compass function also? If you are going to change this you may as well get the best mirror replacement you can find. The pricing is very similar.
Hi Georgieb.
Many thanks for your excellent DIY and sacrifice for other members.
Do you know if 2008 528i has pre-wired harness?
I'm trying to swap my basic mirror (no dimming, no compass, no homelink,etc..) to better one (auto dimming+homelink).
Thank you!

Your'e welcome ttbbsolid,
The easiest way to determine this is to take the shell housing off from behind the mirror and examine the existing connector that is plugged into the mirror. If there are three spare conductors with pins, then the harness has already been pre-wired.

Good luck with your swap and post pictures if available!

Thanks for your response Georgieb.
I've got the new mirror from ebay yesterday and swapped it with my regular mirror.
There are only 2 wires for the alarm on my car unfortunately.
I've opened up the lighting/moonroof control panel and checked the wires.
I couldn't find any additional wires for the dimming. (had wires for only alarm, rainsensors.)

I guess I will have to order the harness and follow your DIY.
I will post some picks later once done.

Thanks again for your DIY and TIP for removing the mirror from windshield.
I didn't damaged the windshield !
