You don't need to drain the engine oil. When the engine is cool and the oil is on the pan the hole for the gasket is actually above the pan so nothing spills out. The gasket/bracket combo is essentially a plug for an oil cooler that isn't fitted with our cars. Why they didn't use a freeze plug there is beyond us. I finally got everything put back together and the car is running bone dry!!! Thanks again Allen for all the tips.

Okay, that makes sense. Thanks for the info. I will be doing this when it stops raining, this week I hope.

There is the lover tang that goes into a hole in the frame.

Here is the stud where the upper hole would correspond to.

I just had the timing and valve covers replaced not too long ago also. Now I need to have this seal replaced. Its just natural that oil will find the weakest point from which to leak from. Are there any other seals to worry about after this?

The tech at the indy shop told me that the European model N62 has an oil line there instead of the seal for whatever reason.

Thanks Allen, great DIY
Here's a video of a 2002 745li. Same N62 engine as our 545i.I'm wondering if you can remove the bracket with the alternator still attached to
it like on the video, but this is for a 745li, and it might be different for the E60.

Nope the engine is further back on a E60, well so it looks, but with the E60 there is bolt you have to get to.

maybe next time I'll try it.

I'm really looking at this hard and cannot see how you can get to the top forward bolt behind the alternator
