I change the engine oil in my 04'530 every 7500 miles. I have been using Mobil 1 5W30 for the last 3 times..but someone suggested I get the 0W40 instead.

My questions:

- is there any benefit changing to Mobil 1 0W40?
- also, does everyone here change the 2 small o-rings in the oil filter housing at every at change, apart from the larger o-ring? I am using Mann filters.

thanks

I just switched to 0W40, Its recommend by BMW since it meets BMW requirements. So I would go with 0W40 European formula
Here is what it says in the manual:
The oils listed below meet BMW?s Long-life rating and are acceptable for use in BMW
Passenger vehicles and SAVs in the US market with gasoline engines.
BMW Long-life rating LL-01
Approved Synthetic Oils for the US Market:

Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30
Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40
Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30
Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30

M1 5w30 is not BMW LL-01 rated and therefore should not be used in our engines. The newer formulation of that oil is not very good anyway, I have personal experience from running it in Japanese cars in my family, I'm not running it anymore. M1 0w40 is a MUCH more stout oil with a much better base stock than the 5w30, use it without even looking back

I personally use M1 0w40 in my car now and will do an oil analysis soon to compare it to the Castrol Syntec 0w30 I used before. That's also a very good oil - sold in PepBoys and Autozone.

I used M1 5W30 every 5000 miles, no problem so far. I don't see any bad effect, can anyone list the bad effect using M1 5W30 ?

5w-30 is thicker on start-up, and thinner when warm, compared to 0-w40. both disadvantages in my opinion.
mobil's 0w-40 is closer in spec to bmw's 5w-30 oil. mobil's 30 weight oils are on the thinner end of the scale.

+1

Would you post a new thread for this comparison?
I've been using German Castrol European 0W-30 and wondering how Mobil 0W-40 European compare to GC
