MASK replacement

My Ride: 05 530i M Sport Sedan / Silver Grey
Help!!!
I have been told by my dealer the MASK unit on my 05 530i is faulty and needs replacing (I-drive & PDC is dead), the cost you may ask......my first born child!!!!
After lots of profanities, rage and telling them where they can stick it i have calmed down and am trying to find a reasonable solution to this probelm.
Is there any reason why i cant source a second hand MASK unit from a similar spec car and fit it myself, then have the dealer recode it? If this is a possbility is there anything i shoud be aware of before going ahead???
