Ipod adapter needs to be programmedat the BMW dealership where they add the icon at the top of the idrive screen. As for the Garmin, I added it along with a video interface from G-NET. The G-NET unit and the Garmin unit (which buy the way I think is discontinued, but Kenwood sells the same thing) fit in behind the idrive video screen. The problem that I ended up with is (when viewing) the Garmin navigation screen is partly cut off on the right hand side, so the picture is missing some details. I called Garmin and they said they couldn't do anthing about it, so I just use it the way it is and I'm fine with it. I would be intersted to know if the other interfaces on the market do the same thing. My car is an 04 545i.
