Hi,

I have a BMW E60 530i May/2005.

Does anyone have instructions, may from the TIS manual, to remove the standard I-Drive controller and replace it with a I-Drive controller HIGH?

How involved is it and approximately how long will it take?

Hi,

Noboby has taken out the I-Drive controller, I'm surprised.

Can't remember seeing anything about it on this forum, however I do recall reading a couple of threads here regarding this.

AFAIK it's possible, but quite expensive and - I imagine - fiddly.

Is the .pdf file in the first post of the following topic what you're looking for?

You don't mention if you have the pre-wiring for the professional nav or not. Either way, my experiences with retrofit kits is that the specific installation instructions are usually included with the kit, not in the TIS.

Hi Rudy,

Appreciate you replying to my PM.

I have Business Navigation at the moment and will be upgrading to Professional Navigation if all works out well.

I'd contacted BMW Australia and they couldn't tell me if my E60 could be upgraded to Pro Navi, however they contacted BMW Germany and after looking at my cars build specs, confirmed that it could be upgraded to PRO NAV.

I've bought off eBay the following for about 1000 Euro shipped to Australia:
  1. 2006 CCC Modul DVD/MP3 (Professional 2 slot)
  2. 2004 Bordmonitor 8,8 (No dead pixel, 100% error free) (trying to get a later built monitor)
  3. I-Drive controller HIGH,(Voice Control)
  4. Microphone and plastic fittings
  5. All cables for install
I couldn't justify spending A$4500-5000 for the retrofit parts, plus A$300 for CCC dashboard facia, plus dealer costs, plus A$450 for the Australian Nav Pro DVD.

The difficulty installing the parts seems to be changing the I-Drive to I-Drive Controller HIGH and running the microphone cable up to the roof.

I believe from others on this forum, I need to do the upgrade in this order:

1) Dealer to perform CIP upgrade
2) Install Pro Navi parts
3) Dealer to encode Retrofit/Nav Pro path software upgrade

I'm not sure if the CCC and 8.8" BoardMonitor need anything done to them before installing as they've come from another E60.

Hi,

Give me a week or two to get the parts from the other side of the world, then I'll provide the guys name if all goes well.

Somebody on this same forum also bought a CCC unit from Europe ebay (Germany) and they could not program to get it to work here in the US at the dealership (I believe it worked but only in German). I think the guy had to buy the CCC unit from US and cost went up considerably.
Good luck. I'm thinking of doing the same, so far I have the 8.8 monitor only.

Hi,

I emailed BMW Australia and received this reply:

Hi Ken

I just spoke to the tech guys again, they have said one a kit or factory
system is coded to a car, that is it for life.

If this kit has already been coded once, it cannot be recoded to another
vehicle, also the factory has given dealers strict instructions not to
try to code a previously coded unit of any description to a vehicle as
the results "could" be detrimental to the rest of the electronics in the
vehicle.

Hope this helps

Regards

Colin
Does anyone know if BMW are just saying this, is it true, once coded to a vehicle, can't be coded to another vehicle, or are they just making sure you have to buy NEW PARTS from BMW.

I don't know about specific parts but I do know that there are many electronic parts that BMW uses that have to be "married" to the car and yes, there is no "divorce" possible once the parts are married.

This happened to me on my E39 once when the dealer tried to replace my MID -- two different parts they received from BMW didn't work at all and it was later determined that another dealer had married the parts to a car then returned them to BMW as if they hadn't used them...
