Hello,

I've had a central computer trouble and the garage decide to completely reset it. After, my steering wheel is not yet "straight", a bit angled to left when driving straight.

Does anyone know how to trim or fine adjust the active steering to set the steering wheel really straight again ?

I had a local tyre fitter adjust the tracking on the two front track rods to re-aling and all is good again. Cost very little and I have no confidence in my local BMW tech's.

reinitalising is normally needed if the battery is taken off, when Tim installs me something eg

so 1st reconect battery

2nd all the way steer to the left

3rd all the way steer to the right

center, like a steering wheel for a game,

then to get rid off the error message you have to go over 30 km/h and some time, then it shall be ok.

But if the AS has some problems the best is to see it with your dealer.

That may have been a big mistake. When it comes to active steering, you need to trust the BMW guys (even though they may have forgotton to reinitialize the AS when they worked on the car) because they have the programming tools to reset these things electronically.

By going to your local tire fitter, you've allowed someone (who's not equipped to perform a simple AS reset electronically) to make mechanical adjustments to a system that didn't need it. Who knows how out of whack your suspension/steering geometry is now...

I second that. I saw how complicated it was for the dealer to re-align my Active Steering using their computers. Can't imagine the damage of doing it mechanically. It took them a whole 2 hours to re-align it with their computers, the tech guy even said, "This is the price you pay for having high tech stuff, can't do it mechanically like japanese cars and older cars anymore."

Thanks for your post, my battery died and after getting the car started every light on the dash came on and I got a transmission code. I let the car run to charge the battery then cut it off and started it again all the lights went off except the AS. I tried the reset, unhooked the battery and put it on a 1.2 charge but still kept getting active steering inactive. THE KEY TO THE RESET IS DRIVING THE CAR OVER 30 MPH. The light went out and the steering returned to normal. thx again.
