Hi All,

Got my "new" E60 525D SE today, drives lovely despite 97K miles on the clock!

The handbrake is way too loose however, you have to pull it right up. How is it adujsted on this car? I remember on my old E39 you just lifted up the handbrake book and tightened two nuts...

Depends whether its the parking brake shoes that need adjusting (likely) or the cable tension. If it's the shoes, refer to parts diagram at Realoem:

You need to rotate the toothed wheel that forms part of item number 7. Rotating this toothed wheel expands/contracts the length of that piece, thereby moving the surface of the shoes nearer/further from the drum.

You rotate the wheel using a large screwdriver inserted through one of the holes left when you remove all 4 wheel bolts. You'll need a torch and a bit of patience as you have to look through the hole to find the toothed wheel, then work out whether to rotate up or down.

I am less familiar with this and of affairs, but it looks like you adjust the length of the rod connecting the lever to the cables. Slacken off the lock nut to the left of the digit "8" and you should be able to shorten the effective length of the mechanism.
