Hi all,

Never been really happy with my standard stereo sound. After much reading of the wisdom on this site I decided to bite the bullet and do something about it. The standard UK system has 6 speakers, 2 under the front seats, 2 in the front doors and two in the rear. The optional HiFi system (std in the US I think) additionally has tweaters in the front doors and at the rear, giving a total of 10, driven by a more powerful amp.

I have added tweaters in the front doors and just this change alone has made a huge difference. The sound is brighter and much more balanced. Audio experts will probably say I need to change the speakers in the doors and add a more powerful amp, but to my ears, the sound is now more than good enough and much, much better than it was.

Fitting is plug an play. Removing the door panels is easy (I have added a how-to in the DIY section). The tweaters simply clip into the empty space behind the grill by the wing mirror and then electrically plug into the spare socket on the existing speaker. Its as if they were meant to be there!

I bought a pair of Logic 7, (Top HiFi) tweaters from the dealer for ?90. Part number B65.13.6.978.631. They come with leads, a small cross-over network and the plug to connect to the existing speakers. Probably could have bought the HiFi tweaters at half the price and got the same result, but figured I was only going to take my door panels off once.

Now really enjoy listening to my favorite music in the car.

Agreed. I couldn't believe it when I found out. BMW describes the single door speaker as "full range". Certainly explains why the standard stereo sounds muddy compared to the E39 which does have tweeters as standard. More bass though in the E60 from the under the seat mid-base units.

B65.13.6.978.631 is the part number for a single tweeter.

B65.13.6.978.628 is the HiFi tweeter if you want to go the cheaper route.

Let me know how you get on.

BMW do love their expensive parts, but the Logic 7 (Top HiFi) tweeters are ?39.81 +VAT each, ?91.56 for the pair. Or at least that is what I paid. Sorry to create confusion and give you a heart attack!

One question, you added the tweeters to the standard 6 speaker e60 system, so they are running off the head unit? or did you install an amp too ???
