Hi fellow BMW drivers.
I am thinking about installing Combox in my E61. I dont have a TCU, so I will need to do all the wirering for it, no problem. But I was wandering if any of you guys have tried to cut the fiber optic kabel used in the BMW's?
Please if you have any experience please share, how, what tool etc.
Best regards
Holtz

I've done it a bunch of times for HUD retrofits. I use an exacto blade on a wooden surface (to make sure the cut goes all the way through). The most important things to note are:
1) Make sure the cut is as level and even as possible
2) The orange coating must be cut back about 1/4 inch from the end of the cable to allow the connector to be crimped on
3) Don't worry about being perfect. I have spliced ends on MOST cable that I thought looked perfect, and others I thought I would have to re-do and never had a problem. Just make sure you allow yourself enough extra length to make mistakes because it may take a try or two to cut/splice it good enough to fit in the copper end-cap.
