Did a coolant flush today and in case anyone wants to know, I had to pour in 4.5 litres to fill it up after venting and toping up.

You may have drained and replaced less than 50% of the old coolant. Bentley (ref pg 170-8) indicates the M54's coolant capacity is 10 L to 10.6 L, depending on transmission.

The M54 has a block drain plug on the right side of the engine (passenger side in North America) near cylinder #2.

It seems to me that you want to do a lot of DIY maintenance. I strongly recommend that you buy a copy of the Bentley Service Manual for your E60.

Thanks Jim, is the Bentley Service Manual better than BMW TIS?

I don't know if one is better than the other. The real point is to use a reputable service manual to find correct specs, i.e., coolant volume.

Does anyone knows where the engine coolant drain plug is? I have the Bentley manual and all the pictures, but for the life of me I cannot see this plug. I have RHD E60 M54 2004 with auto trans. Any images or help to locate the engine drain plug is welcome.

For starter, it is on the Air Intake side of the engine or the other where the Valve cover is? Can it be reached from the top or only the bottom? I am drained the raditor and I think i need to change my aux pump this time, I would not mind changing the coolant at the same time, but this time I want to drain the engine at the same time. Please help!

I am revisiting this old thread because I had to refill my coolant due to some other problem on the car. This time, I followed your advise and drained the engine block as well as radiator. But, upon venting and refill, only 7.75L went into my E60 M54 engine. I am wondering what happened to the remaining 3.25L which the Bentley manual says....? Any suggestions.

The remaining 3.25 liters is in the engine block. I changed my coolant in my 2007 530Xi and I also recovered about 7.75 liters of coolant from the radiator and water pump.

@Fukukita, did you drain the engine block? What engine do you have in your 530Xi, is it M54?
