Hmm - got a post 2005 airbag. It does not fit mechanically in the 2004 Steering Wheel
I see that the mounting plate looks different between the steering wheel I've got, and the post 2005 one pictured in the previous posts in this thread. So I have taken the chance that the mounting plate from post 2005 Steeting Wheel will fit my 2004 Steering Wheel - AND if it does, the post 2005 airbag will fit too
The plate was only 30 bucks - so I figured it is worth trying.... Have it on order now.
Fingers crossed it will work....

It may be - but another thing I just noticed, is that the current mounting plate is non-conductive, so the horn will not work as no ground connection would be made from the contact point on the airbag to the mounting plate. I guess the 2004 airbag has switches build into which is then activated by them being "pressed" against the non conductive struts on the mounting plate, wheres as the new airbag only has conductive points that are supposed to make contact to the mounting plate. This is a bit hard to explain, hope it makes sense....

Ok - figured it out now
So, in order to fit a post-2005 M-Sport Airbag in a pre-2004 M-Sport steering Wheel, the airbag mounting plate in the steering wheel needs to be swapped with one from a post-2005 steering wheel.
Here is how the pre-2005 Steering wheel looks like:
As can be seen, the mounting plate has struts at the horn contact points which are so high that they prevent the airbag to click into place. Also, the black mounting plate is non-conductive, so even if the struts are removed, it would not work as no ground connection for the horn would be there.
Instead you need to fit this mounting plate (part number 32 34 6 772 990)
It fits perfect in the old steering wheel - no modifications needed:
And here is the end result - a 2011 build airbag in a 2004 build steering wheel
Now I just need to do the Horn rewiring, and then fit it in the car!

just so i understand in regards to the horn wiring i jus need to move the power wire to the blank space and fit a new pin in the original space of the power one and connect that to the steering wheel mount pin for earth
