Let me add my thanks! Even though my car is still covered by the free maintenance, I could not get my car in any time soon since they like to keep it for the day for just an oil change. I changed it myself tonight using the instructions from this thread. My car, a 2006 530xi, is a little different though. The drain bolt/hole points straight down. While that makes it easy to get the used oil to drain directly into the catch pan, it does make it a little more challenging to get the drain bolt off. You must use a 17mm socket wrench. You'll want about a 3" extension on it. No extension means you're banging your knuckles on the underside panels, too much extension and your wrench is sitting in your catch pan.

THANKS!

Miami Phil,
Does the new small O-ring go on that middle "sphere" that is sticking up on the middle of the oil filter cap? I know where the big one goes, but from your pictures I cannot really tell.
Yes, thats where the small O-ring goes.......by the way, always apply a small bit oil along the new O-rings before reinstalling the cap.

Also if I understand correctly, there was not an o-ring on the drainage plug when you did your first oil change?
No, the plug did not have a washer (o-ring) but I put the new one from the kit on......but if you leave it off no worries, it is more important not to cross thread the plug.

Also, what kind of jack did you use?
I used the jack that comes with the car but, it was very scary, I intend to use jack stands next time.

Also, in case it helps, this is how/where I raised the driver's side on my 530xi (note the jack, and jack stand):

Is Mobil 1 better than the BMW oil? I was thinking of using that for my soon to come 2006 530xi.

BMW oil filter wrench is 86mm a bit special size wise but can be used with any 3/8" torque wrench.
Would you guys recommend this wrench for an 09 535i?

Thanks.

Thanks.

I got one from one of the online vendors...

It had BMW stamped on it, not to say it was made by BMW, not sure.

It was scalloped on the inside to fit the oil filter housing nicely.

It still left some minor residue and scratches on the filter housing, but that it to be expected i guess when you put metal to plastic.

Maybe the rubber filter strap wrench would be better.

Wonderful write-up MP

As you may imagine I am in the market for a new 535xiT and I am planning to do a 2000 mile oil change and then half cycle changes or annual changes as the case may be.

You superb tutorial give me hope that I can do the non-covered changes myself.

I am a fan of Mobil 1 - they have an Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil that I used in my old and gone 2006 530xiTthat should be all that the Castrol oil is. Correct me if my assumption re Mobil 1 is wrong.

No I don't think so, when the 'oil service required' message comes up merely changing the oil will not reset the interval....... that, I am sure requires some sort deliberate electronic reset at the dealer.

Can I confirm that if you change the oil BEFORE the 'oil service required' message comes up, the system will detect the new oil and you will not have to go to dealer for oil reset? I am assuming it is best to oil change like 500 miles remaining, so a reset isn't required.

I thought in some previous threads you could reset the check control for the service maintenance in the event that this message does occur, (step 6: http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=...4&hl=reset).

Can anyone confirm?

I just changed my oil for the first time, at about 8,000 miles. Will also take it in for the maintenance agreement, so I obviously did NOT want my service indicator to reset due to the new oil.

It did not.

I changed the oil and filter and nothing changed at all in the oil Idrive numbers.
