I just changed my oil, and I must say, this write up is perfect. EXCELLENT...... did it in 30 min, with waiting around for draining, sucking up oil from oil filter housing. cleaning oil from drain plug. etc....
I USED ramps which i got at a yard sale, i got ones from SEARS, but they are plastic and slide, i got some metal ones that weight like 20 lbs each. and are rock solid.
SO i recommend ramps, and all the tools mentioned in the first post.
THANKS FOR THE EXCELLENT WRITE UP>>>>>

Changed my 535's oil yesterday in 30 minutes also. So easy even a caveman could do it.
Just be careful to properly remove the bottom cowling as there is a latch that can get broken if forced.

After reading 7 pages of this thread, I must say that it was like a good movie, I did not even feel the time go by and.....
it is one of the top ten posts ever in this forum I must add.
Great, simple to understand instructions. Great writeup and video!!!
I wish we had one of these high quality BMW-grade posts for each of the DIYs...!!
I definitively, most assuredly will change my oil soon, I feel like a BMW-tech now.

Here's a (kind of) dumb question for all the experts:
I have always wondered about when changing the oil, some of the old oil will remain, and contaminate the new oil so it would become dirty pretty quick.
Is this idea baseless? or is there some truth about it??
When I wash something in the kitchen sink for example, I would wash and rinse a few times, and not just dump the contents and call it clean, and leave it to dry.
I think that, on the other hand, the logical thing to do would be extremely expensive. like dumping a lot of oil and letting it go all the way to the oil pan at the other end........
Any ingenious thoughts ???? Take a minute and share!!!

There were 2 difference between your car and my 05 530i.
First is the plastic shield under the engine. Mine is held by 2 clips and 1 philips screw. Once the philips screw is undone, pull the shield down. The shield is still attached to the big plastic cover under the engine.
Second is the drain plug, same size 17mm but is not pointing downard. It points kind of horizontal. So there is a chance of having used oil shooting to the big plastic shield under the engine.
Otherwise, the procedure is the same excepted that I drive the car onto ramp to do oil change.

Just yanking your chain.
Thanks.

Actually, as long as you change oil every 7500 miles or so, there is no need to do any extra. (Obviously, I do not believe in any manufact's recommendation for 10k, 15k, etc. Service writers can write a book re people who took 'too long' between oil changes. Just my 2 cents.

Here is a pic of what I think is the oil drain plug on my 08 535, size 17m this is way different than my 335 oil plug location. Did BMW relocate the drain plug? Comments anyone.
