Which Brand And grade of oil??
#12
my 545i says to use castrol on the oil cap, but on BMW's sight the only castrol they recomended was the German formula 0W-30. Is it ok I use 0W-30 even if I live where the low cold is in the 40's and the high temp is 90's? or should i use the mobile 1 5W-30 because thats better suited for the area I live in?
thanks!
thanks!

firstly BMW do not make oil...it might have there name on it but its a premium brand inside.
secondly BMW only recomend certain oils not because there the best , but because the oil companys pay BMW to have that endorsement (im sure though that bmw would only endorse the best)
so any good quality oil like 5/40 0r 0/40 would be fine.
diesels take the same oil but most have additives to help with soot issues etc, but you can add addditives.

From the BMW website:
BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Approved Synthetic Oils for the US Market:
Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30
Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40
Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30
Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30
Done.

Edited: but that oil will decrease a bit the fuel economy but it the best to protect the engine.

Greetings,
i would like to know what is the best type of oil(brand and grade) for hot climates.
I am in Jamaica and the temp rarely drops below 75 degree farenheit.
Please let me hear your various recommendations.
the car is a 2006 525i.
respect

Anyway, you can get it in most Autozones in the US for $6.99 a quart. It meets virtually all of the important oil specs, including BMW LL-01, MB 229.5, VW 50301, ACEA A3/B3, Ilsac GF-3, etc.
I think if you have access to this oil, it's a no-brainer for most BMW's excepting the M series
