okay a couple of days ago the battery died... I tryed trickle charging it over two nights last week... but the battery just died today on my wife... along with the battery dying I was getting faulty codes (e.g. dynamic malfuction, increased emissions, etc..) I just installed a Werker battery, perfect fit excep for the little ventalater hose for the battery fumes. I had to do some McGyver shit and make one, after I connected the battery, I reset all the codes, started it up, reset the steering thingy, shut the car down, started the car up, and there you go. No faulty codes!!! drove around, put gas, came home, stil no faulty codes. My BMW buddy said that Werker batterys are made for German cars!
This is day two and no faulty codes, everything is working fine on the 5.... I would suggest getting a Werker battery!

A battery is a battery it does not know if it is in a German car or a car made on the moon. As long as the battery is the right CCA, Ah and fits it will work.

As far as the dealer programing for a new battery, I think it is BS but they clainm rthat they have to do so. I had them do it to my new battery. Cost ($95) me more then the darn battery itself.

It's time to for me to change my battery aswell -- nearing 5 years of car ownership and I'd rather replace it before it dies on me. Why would you not just use the OEM battery? It's part # 61 21 6 901 815. Realoem lists the cost at $222.92 with BMW CCA discount you can get it probably for like $175. The dealership shouldn't be charging anymore than that for the part and perhaps an hour of labor to install it/reprogram/do whatever so it should be under $300 for an OEM battery replacement by a dealer IMO. Dealers are quoting $500+ for this? I'm going in for service next month and will raise hell if they tell me 500 bucks!

ok, to put the matter to rest... you do have to register the new battery! now having said this, i dont know if it will have an adverse effect if you dont. it seems kinda silly we cant even change the battery without the dealer involved...

I was told exactly the same story about "marrying the new battery to the car computer" by our local BMW mechanic and that this could only be done through the BMW store computer at a cost of $500+. It sounded fishy to me so I've been investigating as my 06 530xi touring will be due soon and my partners 06 530xi is slowly dying. Marc, have you had any Idrive or other problems since the battery replacement? When you changed the battery did you keep the system hot with another battery or did you do a cold replacement? I have a real love/hate relationship with this car and BMW; they have made it almost impossible to do any service myself.

George
Hey bro, I just changed my battery with the Duralast 95 model. Cannot get the active steering to initialize. I did the process numerous times. The steering is a little stiff also.

It is absolute BS!!! The dealer programming is resetting the clock and Active Steering which takes all of 2 or 3 minutes. All a battery does is supply voltage and current. There is no electronics connection to the battery. I changed mine several weeks ago as noted in the original post and I have had no problems.

Which battery does my 545i have?
How many batteries the E60 has?
Can I get one bigger?
Maybe for Canada and cold places there is an enhanced battery.....

Edit:
http://bmwfans.info/original/E60/Lim/545i-...61/ill-61_1853/

80, 90 and 110. What do I have now?
Good info. I need to save if this does not become a sticky.
