Yes it is true on the E60!

If you charge the battery directly, not through the poles under the hood, the computer doesn't recognizes it and will still act as if the battery is uncharged. This leads to a memory effect fast.
The power system on the E60 needs to recognize the charge and therefore it needs to be done through the poles under the hood, which are actually NOT designed for recharging, they are there for jump starting.
So, if I need to RECHARGE my battery,do I have to access the battery in the boot (trunk),rather than use the terminals under the bonnet (hood)?

No, you have to use the poles under the hood, allthough they were not meant for charging the battery it's the only and correct way to do it.
If you charge the battery directly (on its poles in the trunk) you need to "tell" your computer that the battery is recharged, which mens you need to re-initialize the system.

Thanks for the clarification

You have to charge it via the poles under the hood, NOT in the trunk!
In due respect to Ice and all who agree with him, I charge directly on the battery terminals. I have never had to re-initialize anything.

It has been successful both after I have had the various low charge warnings and as a pre-emptive boost.

Where does the notion that a re-initialize is necessary originate?

I like my set-up because all I have to do is to pop the trunk and plug the charger into a 120VAC extension cord. When I feel the charge is adequate, I pull the plug, close the trunk and drive off.

I was told so by:

BMW HQ Munich
BMW dealer (where all cars are hooked up under the hood while beeing worked on)
BMW Roadside Assist (when my battery died)

If it worked for you it doesn't mean your battery is OK now.
You are creating a memory effect and the intervalls in between the low battery warnings get smaller, due to the memory effect.

No, it is not. There is _nothing_ to monitor the SOC from the jump point under the hood. It's wired directly to the battery. Please, read the fscking WDS.

The power system is monitored by the computer.
As you know, once the power reaches a certain point, the computer switches systems off to conserve the energy needed for the next start.
BMW calls it an "inntelligent battery pole".
However, since the system IS monitored, the computer only recognizes power loaded up to the battery if done from under the hood. If you do it on the battery directly you are working around the (not so) "intelligent battery pole" and create a memory effect, because the system will not allow usage of the full battery. This is because it has not learned about the charging, when working around the "intelligent" pole.

Source is BMW!

blah blah blah ... "inntelligent battery pole".

Perhaps you meant IBS "Intelligent Battery Sensor"

BTW... There is nothing to stop charge on the battery between X6509 (alt) and X13769 (Batt). It's a physical connection with no FETs, no triacs, no relays, no nuthin'.

There also is nothing to stop charge between G6430 (jump start) and X13769 (Batt).

Source BMW WDS (Wiring Diagram System).

If you 'work around' the IBS, or Intelligent Pole (whatever), the external charger is then responsible for the charge and float. There is no memory in a flooded battery. You could have sulfation but that's not a "memory" of charge.
